It’s a simple combination of pecorino romano and truffle, but its balanced richness and creaminess makes this a must order to share, or better yet, as a personal entree. From “fresh and flavorful” to “mushy and questionable”, the quality of steak tartare is extremely important not just for taste, but to avoid an unwanted, pricey trip to the hospital. Luckily, the steak tartare here is fantastic—with a light salty and peppery taste, a creamy yolk, umami-packed anchovy mayo, and thick pieces of warm bread. Though using the bread to make a tartare sandwich might feel a bit unhinged, you won’t regret it.

One of our guests sent us feedback on Resy once and said that what they liked the most during their experience was seeing how much the staff enjoyed being here and were having a good time on the floor, in a professional way of course. We will make note of a guest’s preference and we will try our best to accommodate. But it really depends on how long guests are there beforehand, or if people are running slightly late. Armitage Alehouse, the new gastropub from the owners of Au Cheval, is open in Lincoln Park and the menu isn’t orthodox by fusing a dash of Anglo-Indian cuisine with Chicago’s love for chops and burgers. At another restaurant, seeing only one pasta dish on the menu is probably a red flag that makes you immediately turn the page. But here, the only reason why you should be on alert is because the truffle bucatini is excellent.

Those looking for a flawlessly faithful English pub will find plenty to quibble about, but give in and you can leave behind the reality of, say, Chicago in the grips of a gray winter, and venture into a fictional world. I thought we agreed to an email interview, but then he or someone from his organization mostly ignored my questions.

The team behind downtown spots like Bavette’s, Ciccio Mio, and Trivoli Tavern is exceptionally good at copy and pasting. Step into any of their restaurants and you’ll notice the same dim lighting, antique decor, attentive service, and occasionally even the same dishes. The worst offender is chicken tikka masala ($20), which tastes like limp poached chicken tenders in a barely spiced tomato sauce.

Reservations regularly disappear weeks in advance. I was only able to visit by showing up before 5 p.m. And sitting at the bar, where the seats are first come, first served. So why are people electing to wait around in a Chicago winter—or frantically refresh Resy every morning—to eat at Armitage Alehouse? It’s very classic and consistent, and consistency is one the values of the group.

But we haven’t seen a lot of success with that because guests who don’t get notified by the day make other plans. You can’t go wrong with the curries, especially the chicken curry. And I would say our wagyu cheeseburger is probably one of our most popular dishes. It’s a pressed burger with American Cheddar cheese served with French fries.

As with all of the Hog Salt restaurants in the group - it's incredible. The atmosphere is cozy and dark but still lively. In addition to a fine wine list, there are, no surprise, some excellent ales, including Fuller's Champion Ale, an extra special bitter and Guiness Draft Nitro. On the menu are the expected -- and beautifully prepared -- Pike Fish and Chips as well as the English Cut Prime Rib Sandwich...and a whole lot of food from the Indian subcontinent. Sticking to the traditional English dishes provides firmer footing, even though I wish the crust on the pike fish and chips ($27) wasn’t so heavy.

Hogsalt wants the interiors at its bar, full of natural woods under dim lighting, to remind diners of London in the 1920s. Taking inspiration for British pub culture, the restaurant veers from Chicago’s craft beer scene attempting to curate its own collection of Old World-style beers. Guinness and Harp headline; black & tans are even listed on the menu.

There’s also an espresso martini on the drink list along with a half-dozen signature cocktails. Brendan Sodikoff doesn’t create restaurants; he fashions escapes from reality. Give this one another couple months before rushing to log onto Resy every day, unless you're a diehard Anglophile who can't resist a proper pint and a pie.
